Have you turned on a faucet or shower only to get no hot water? It’s a common problem and a significant inconvenience that most people will experience at some point. Let’s explore what’s most likely to cause fixtures not to get hot water.

Water Heater Is Leaking

The most obvious cause of not having any hot water is a leak. A major leak will be noticeable, as many gallons of water will be in your water heater closet. Still, even a relatively small leak can cause no hot water because the pressure in the tank will be low.

Tank Too Small

If you recently installed a water heater, it may be that the tank is too small. Tank water heaters cannot heat water on demand. They need to heat water in advance and store it for you. The system won’t keep up if the demand is too great for the tank size.

No Power or Fuel

Another common issue is that your water heater isn’t getting power or fuel. Be mindful that even most fuel-burning water heaters require some electricity. Check the circuit breaker to see if it’s tripped. If it has, you can reset it. If it has, you may have to wait for the system to reheat the water supply if it’s been off for a while. If it trips again, don’t keep resetting it. It can indicate a problem with the electrical system that can lead to further damage.

If you have a fuel-burning water heater, check the fuel supply. Make sure that the gas valve is in the open position. In some cases, this valve can go bad and require replacement. If you run your water heater off liquid propane, ensure the tank isn’t empty. If it passes these checks, you need a water heater service specialist to diagnose the problem.

Temperature Setting or Faulty Thermostat

Check the temperature setting for your water heater. This may require removing a cover to access it. Make sure that you haven’t inadvertently set it too low. You should also check to ensure you haven’t inadvertently activated vacation mode. Many modern water heaters have a vacation mode to avoid unnecessary energy usage while you’re away. If these aren’t the issues, then it may be that a thermostat has failed. Our plumbers can test both the upper and lower thermostats. We can calibrate or replace them if needed.

Limescale and Sediment

Even soft water will have some minerals and sediment in it. Those particles can build up in your water heater over time. That’s why it’s important to flush a tank water heater annually and replace the anode rod as needed. Sediment and limescale accumulation will lead to inefficiency. That can make your water heater slower to recover. It can eventually lead to component failure that results in no hot water. Limescale accumulation can become so severe that it blocks the hot water line.

Combustion or Electric Heating Issue

If you have a fuel-burning system, check the pilot light. If it’s gone out, you can relight it. Contact a plumber if you find it difficult to light or it keeps going out. That indicates a more serious problem. There may be other issues with the combustion system. That can include a faulty burner, heat exchanger, or thermocouple. If you have an electric water heater, it likely has an upper and lower heating element. If either has failed, the lack of hot water will be the reason.

Broken Dip Tube

Tank water heaters have a dip tube to channel cold water to the bottom of the tank. This part can fail over time. If it’s been failing, you may have noticed signs, such as white specks in your hot water or getting increasingly cooler. The good news is that this is a relatively simple fix. Our plumber will just have to remove the old dip tube and insert a new one.
